Artist Yayoi Kusama Presents Her Dazzling Art At Yayoi Kusama Museum

If you are into art, you should’ve heard about Yayoi Kusama (草間彌生), one of the most influential artists in the world. Her works have played an important role in the art space of 20th and 21st centuries. Kusama is an icon and a world phenomenon.

Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Kusama began drawing polka-dot and net pattern pictures in the age of ten as the result of her visual and auditory hallucinations, which she experienced since young age.

In 1957, when Kusama was 28, she went to the United States, where she began creating net paintings and soft sculptures, as well as developing installations that made use of mirrors and lights.

Kusama had since discovered an artistic philosophy of self-obliteration through her obsessive repetition and multiplication in various size of a single motifs.

In 1968, a film entitled ‘Kusama’s Self-Obliteration’, which was produced and acted by Kusama, had won awards at the Fourth International Experimental Film Competition in Belgium and the Second Maryland Film Festival. Her film had also won the second place at Ann Arbor Film Festival.

Yayoi Kusama has held numbers of exhibitions around the world. Her large-scale retrospective exhibitions at the Tate Modern and Pompidou Centre have received considerable responses. Her art tours in Latin America and Asia have successfully recorded more than 2 million visitors, which also led her being named as ‘world’s most popular artist in 2014’ by the Art Newspaper.

Kusama has also received Japan’s Order of Culture in 2016. In 2017, her tour of North American has started at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., which exhibited her iconic pumpkin sculpture.
