Self-Taught Latte Artist Daphne Tan Whips Up Adorable 3D Coffee Art

Singapore based Daphne Tan aka. Periperipeng takes latte art to the higher level. The 17-year-old is quickly making a name for herself by creating unique 3D characters from latte foam popping out of the coffee cup.

Her interest began about a year ago when she had a chance to attend a gourmet coffee appreciation in a school workshop. She was then experimenting with a French press and found a method to create a stable foam.

The self-taught latte artist is now using a milk frother to whip-up foam by mixing soy milk, carob powder and water. The foam is thick enough for her to create her coffee sculpture.

It takes around 10 to 20 minutes to create each piece of beautiful 3D latte art. The character range from fluffy kitty to cute octopus. You will also find many recognizable characters such as Nemo, Stitch and Pikachu.

And boy, I would prefer to enjoy the kawaii characters than coffee. They are just too cute to drink.

I’ve received multiple media requests whereby various companies have asked me questions about my hobby and I appreciate it a lot because these questions make me ponder about my journey. “What do people say when they first see your latte art” was one question I got. I never really thought about it but here was my response. There is a spectrum of reactions. Many say "oh my gosh, it's so cute" and I've received comments expressing their awe of the wobbly lattes. I've actually even gotten a DM for a marriage proposal HAHAHAHA However, detractors often posit that my creations are a "waste of time", "didn't her parents teach her not to play with food" or "the coffee will get cold". My focus isn't really on the coffee per say, though I love coffee but rather, the art of food. The mantra "you eat with your eyes first" resonates with me and I wanted to pursue an art form that was different from a regular canvas, that was more fragile hence challenges me with its complexity. I just thought I’d share my thoughts!
