When we talk about traveling to China, one thing that comes in mind is its pollution. We will start thinking to walk on streets full of smog. Bad air is everywhere. But the fact is not every cities in China is polluted.
Unlike Beijing, Hebei and Tianjin and other urban area on the northern part, Xiamen is pretty much clearer, despite its role as one of the first four earliest special economic zones of the country. Xiamen itself means “Gate of house”, or can be roughly defined as “Gate of China”.
The city, which is located in southeast China, is also one of the main tourist attraction, with excellent scenery, interesting culture, splendid history and folklore to explore. Its subtropical climate with beautiful seascape create unforgettable experience as well.
Some major tourist attactions in this tourist city of Fujian Province are Xiamen island, Gulangyu island, Southern Putuo Temple and Jimei School Village.
Gulangyu island is completely forbidden to motorized transportation vehicles, such as cars. It is an island located just off coast of Xiamen and can be accessed through ferry. Before stepping on the city, you would have been able to imagine beautiful scenery and fresh air. Yes, fresh air, and the city is clean as well.
The clean air is very much the result of bike culture, which has been part of its residents’ lifestyle for decades. And to strengthen and promote this green culture, Xiamen has opened a bike-way or cycle-way in the city.
The Xiamen Bicycle Skyway is designed by Dissing + Weitling Architecture, a Copenhagen-based architect firm.
The elevated bicycle way is 5 metres above the street, with 4.8 metres wide and 7.6 kilometre long, and it has been claimed as the longest bicycle way in the world.
There are 11 entry and exit points allowing commuters to have direct access to eleven bus stations and two subway stations, shopping malls and public buildings, making it possible to go around the city without stepping into more expensive taxi service.
Here are some quick picks of Xiamen Bicycle Skyway.
