Digital Artist Jane Long Colorizes 19th Century Statues To Make Them Come To Life

An Australian digital artist Jane Long who is based in Brisbane has been known for recolouring photographs. Her previous series “Dancing with Corsica” has gone viral and gained international attention. The project was about recolouring glass plate images from Romanian photographer Costica Ascinte.

Long is now making the wave again with another unusual turn of her new series “Statues“.

Jane Long said,

“I started recolouring statues a couple of years ago using public domain images. I really wanted better control over the source images, so when I was in Ballarat for the Ballarat International Foto Biennale a couple of years ago, I went and shot the collection at the Ballarat Botanic Gardens.”

The images featured are all part of the Garden’s extensive statue collection. All but one are a part of the same series of statues by Charles Summer, purchased with bequest funds from James Russell Thompson in 1888. The odd one out is Hebe, which is part of the Stoddard Collection.

According to Long,

“Whilst the statues have retained their original names in the series, I’ve deliberately chosen not to place them in the context of the historical characters the statues represented, but to see them simply as beautiful women and to imagine who they might have originally been modelled on.”

Each images required long hour of Photoshop works. Each of them includes very detailed finishes. including cloth, lace, pattern and lighting to make them highly realistic.

The series was initially designed as still images but the cinemagraph versions turns out to be even more realistic and haunting as well.

Long is now preparing for a series of workshop retreats on fashion and conceptual photography, compositing and digital post production with Rob Woodcox, an American fine art photographer. The retreats will be held in boutique holiday locations across Eastern Australia.
